Keiffer George Garton Sr.

Keiffer was born May 10, 1905 on a farm 2-1/2 miles southeast of Humeston, Iowa.

His birth father was David D. Breuer (b Mar 5th, 1886, died 1916.

As an infant he lived with his grandparents on his mother's side, Winfield Scott Sponsler and Rebecca Jane Allen. (Allen was her maiden name.) Keiffer's mother remarried when he was 4 years old to Samual Franklin Garton in 1909.

They lived on a farm 1-3/4 miles northwest of Humeston for 2 years. Then they moved to a farm 4-3/4 miles south of Humeston to live with George Washington Garton, Keiffer's step grandfather. Then Keiffer moved to a farm 2 miles west of the George Washington Garton farm, known as the Press Garton farm, where he lived for 1 or 2 years. Samual Franklin Garton bought a farm known as the McCart farm 2-1/2 miles west of the Unity Church where Keiffer lived until he reached the fourth grade. The farm was sold and Keiffer moved to Humeston, Iowa where he graduated from the Humeston high school.
Samual Franklin Garton worked at Doze Motor Co. until 1923. He purchesed the C. L. Hart Clothing Store where Keiffer worked part time. Samual operated the clothing store for 2 years as Garton & Garton Clothing.
Keiffer married Madge W. Dunn on January 11, 1925. They moved to the George Washington farm 4-3/4 miles sough of Humeston.
The clothng store proved unprofitable and was sold in June of 1925. ("Selling clothes on credit is kinda like selling groceries on credit," K)
Keiffer and Madge had two sons:

• Keiffer George Garton Jr., born January 10, 1926


• Howard Franklin Garton, born December 22, 1933.

Madge commited suicide on September 24, 1934, at the age of 26, while staying with her mother at Jewel.
He stayed on the farm. Keiffer Jr. lived with him for two years. Howard lived with Jane Garton.
Keiffer married Coy Ethel Fry on May 10, 1939 and Howard returned home. Keiffer continued farming.

Keiffer G. Garton Jr., and Mrs. H. C. Smith were in Humeston on Wednesday to attend the funeral services for his grandfather, S. F. Garton of Humeston.
